Behind The Lens

Location

This Photo was taken at the Fort Worth Zoo, I was inspired by a trip I had taken to Abilene, TX. for a conference. I decided that i was not ready to go home so i stop by the zoo just to enjoy the rest of the day. I was able to capture some amazing photos of the animals and many people that were there visiting. After my trip, I thought, "Hey why not visit all of the zoo's and safari's and animal reservations to get more great photos." So I planned trip to my local zoo in Fort Worth, TX. well my mom found out that I was going to the zoo and she came along, it had been 30 years since I had visited my local zoo, "WAY TOO LONG," so among all of the other great animals this beautiful animal was photographed.

Time

This is one of my favorite images, I have always loved big cats. It was in the heat of the day in the sweltering summer of TEXAS, triple digit weather I had to walk miles from where I had parked to get into the zoo, let alone the walk around the zoo, while mom motored by on a scooter asking, "did you get a picture of that animal, what about this one, oh! did you get this one, make sure you get that one?." She looks at this beautiful lion and says, he looks old, cracks up laughing and motors away, wait till I tell her that my photo was chosen to be featured, she is going to scream with laughter and excitement.

Lighting

I have always been a fan of Natural Light, it simply photographs beautifully, and it gives you so many different experiences with so much drama at every angle.

Equipment

This was taken with a Nikon D3200, no flash was used, no tripod or human tripod if you count me. the lens was Nikon DX AF-S Nikkor 55-200mm, aperture f/8.0, ISO- 2800 and shutter speed was 10/2500

Inspiration

I had the great opportunity to photograph a Jaguar in the Abilene zoo, and as I stated earlier, I have always loved Big Cats, and dreamed of owning one when I was a child, but I think I will just stick to photographing them, it is just as rewarding.

Editing

No this is a RAW image

In my camera bag

I have a Speed Light if I want a faster shutter speed, I keep a smaller lens and my point and shoot Nikon CoolPix P500, extra SD cards, my wifi connection is hooked to my camera, a Nikon HB-37 for Wide angle shots and a small video camera.

Feedback

Just patience in getting the shot that you want, as a photographer you have to be willing to endure somethings to capture what your perfect shot is. That depends on what you want the outcome to be. A true photographer knows that photography is much more than just snapping pictures. There is a lot of passion that goes into capturing any image, but it is even more rewarding when you have planned and you experience much more than you expected. As a photographer you become one with your subject and you get a better understanding of it's life, and it is like a breathe of fresh air when you can literally see into the very depths of what you are photographing. The emotions that follow will make you continue your journey to tell someone/something else's story.
