Behind The Lens

Location

This is taken at a private fishing lake located next to clay pits outside of Newton Abbot, Devon, UK.

Time

It was the evening, as the sun was JUST beginning to set. I remember cos I was heading to my grandmothers which is just down the road from where this was taken. And as usual I was late cos I being lazy.

Lighting

The lighting is all natural, however, I set my exposure for a slightly darker than normal bias.

Equipment

Canon EOS 400D, a tripod, a 18-55mm lens and a cheap wide angle filter which gave the image an interesting effect.

Inspiration

I love nature, and I love capturing changes in the environment around me. I often took pictures of this area, but, this one stood out to me more. Mostly due to the effect on the filter. But, I feel that the lighting was pretty nice also.

Editing

Yes. But, also no. This is taken as an HDR image. So, in the editing side of things. THe most editing was using Photomatix to blend the images together. Beyond that... nothing else is adjusted.

In my camera bag

In my bag... well... my camera, the standard 18-55mm lens, sometimes my 75-300mm lens. I often carry remote timer as well. Oh, and extra batteries. I like to make do with the basics. I don't need extremely expensive equipment to take good shots. Lastly, I often also carry a 35mm film camera with me also. (I have a few different ones, so, it varies as to which one)

Feedback

Make sure if you want to do landscape shots to have your camera on something steady - whether that's a hard surface like a rock. Or, a tripod. As movement in the camera is easily discernible in the finished image. Next, the focus is an important factor. You want to typically aim for some midpoint that has strong presence in the image. This means that that part will be most in focus whilst the rest of the image has at the very least "some" depth and focus to it. Lastly, take your time to line up your shot exactly as you want it. Often rushing a shot won't present a good image.
