Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken on the River Otter, Newton Poppleford, Devon

Time

Dawn on a cold February day

Lighting

Very misty but bright early sun coming over the right hand side of my shoulder

Equipment

Canon 5D Mkii with Zeiss 50mm lens on a tripod with remote cable.

Inspiration

Passing this point every day, I promised myself to capture the atmospheric early morning mist.

Editing

Simple conversion to B&W and cropping. Otherwise, straight from the camera.

In my camera bag

Travel light. Camera, perhaps 2 prime lenses, ND filters. I have recently sold all my DSLR kit and moved over the Fuji X-Pro2. Also use a manual light meter rather than use TTL metering. Gives me much more control over exposure and I tend to find that there is less need for post-processing to correct errors.

Feedback

Patience, and pre-visualise the image you want to take. I use hypoerfocal distance and pre-focus manually. Keep checking exposure settings as the light can change quite significantly at this time of day. Choose your moment!
