In the Fern Forest

My wife was so looking forward to hiking on the Kahauale'a trail to the Pu'u O'o lava flows on the Big island of Hawaii and seeing a tropic jungle for the first time with all the beautiful wildflowers on the trail. As we got closer to the trailhead I noticed signs that we were approaching a fern forest. As we got to the trailhead my wife saw beautiful wildflowers and got really excited even though it was raining (light drizzle). As we started hiking the sky was no longer visible and huge ferns were all the eye could see. A bit of a disappointment for my wife, but we did see some unusual plants with the Hawaiian tree fern fiddlehead being one of them.
