I took this photo in Bryson City, North Carolina on March 5, 2014. My husband and I were visiting with his nephew who lives in a beautiful home nestled in the Great Smoky Mountains. We were hiking on this particular day right near his home and as the sun set we saw this spectacular view.Time
It was close to sunset at 6:19 pm.Lighting
The sun was just beginning to set at the time this photo was taken and the lighting from it was just spectacular and captured the mountains beautifully. I happen to enjoy taking pictures of sunsets because it gives any photo a certain depth and the colors that are generated from it are stunning.Equipment
I used my Canon camera EOS Rebel SL1 with my zoom lens EF-55-250 range. I did not use a tripod but used the flash as a filler.Inspiration
The mountains always inspire me and hiking is a passion of mine. I have been to the Great Smoky Mountains before but never had the opportunity to photograph the scenery. So on this particular trip, I was prepared with camera in hand to capture the beauty of the mountains at sunset. This is the view that my husband's nephew and his wife see every night right outside of their home. We only needed to hike a few feet to capture this moment.Editing
I did not have to do much in the way of post-processing. I just adjusted the shadows and highlights a little to bring out the detail of the mountains in the photo. I used to use Adobe Photoshop Elements 12 but now use Adobe Lightroom 5 in conjunction with Elements 12.In my camera bag
I normally carry my Canon camera in my bag with two lenses: a zoom lens with a 55-250 range and a macro lens EF 100mm, 1:2.8. I also have a instruction manual, an additional battery and various filters in my bag.Feedback
Timing is everything if you want to capture the mountains at sunset. About an hour before sunset, I went outdoors to set my camera on the appropriate settings and I practiced taking a few photos first to get the right composition of the mountains that I wanted to take. Then I waited for the right time to start shooting. The sun sets so quickly, so I needed to hurry up and take as many shots as I could.
