Location
During the time I was living in New York, Harriman State Park was just a 5 min drive away for me. With 47,527 acres there was plenty of exploring to do; and being so close, I explored a lot. And in all kinds of weather.Time
I knew the day was going to be overcast, so I wasn't very concerned when I went out. It seemed like the perfect day to do some long exposure. there's a small bridge just before a clearing with a stream running under it. I usually just pass through here without much thought. I decided to go off trail a little and see what was up stream. This is where I landed, and only about 100 feet away. This was taken at 6:30 pm on 4/25/201.Lighting
I'm a big fan of natural lighting and shooting outdoors. Cloudy or overcast days help diffuse light and will ultimately give you an image that isn't blown out; If that's the look you're going for.Equipment
I used a canon EOS 40D, Tamron 28-300mm lens, tripod and a shutter release. It was taken with an iso of 100, F22 for 25 sec.Inspiration
At that time of my photography I was just getting into the digital game of cameras and had spent quite sometime away from photography (life happens). I was just diving into long exposure with the new digital side; with the conditions of that day and recently got out of work, it seemed the perfect opportunity.Editing
As I was learning the digital side of photography, I was also teaching myself photoshop. This opened a whole new world of possibilities and being able to push processing to another level. Even with all the processing available, I still try to capture what I want in camera. With this image I just did some basic processing, exposure, highlights, shadows. That was about all I did.In my camera bag
Just on the fly, I normally carry my Canon 5D mark iii, Canon 24-70mm f2.8 lens, Flash, shutter release, several compact flash cards, ND filter, tripod, lens cleaner, extra battery and charger. This may seem like a lot to some people, but most items are small and don't take up much room. With this basic setup, I feel I'm ready to shoot just about anything.Feedback
Any chance on catching a good long exposure I would suggest a sturdy tripod and a release. If you don't have a release, use the timer on your camera. This way you're not disturbing the camera when the shutter goes off. and if you don't have a tripod, try setting it up on a log, stone wall, etc. I got one of my best images setting up on a log because I didn't bring my tripod. Yes, it took several tries. And lastly, keep trying different settings, don't be afraid of trying something different. Whats the worst that can happen? you delete the picture! Oh No!
