Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at a local lake in West Palm Beach, Florida

Time

Sunset.

Lighting

Since it was changing minute to minute, I had to adjust my exposure settings with each shot. I used to shoot fully on auto, but I have weaned myself off of that (to my own amazement)....so much so that I no longer really even trust auto to get the best exposure - there are just too many elements that are involved to capture light properly.

Equipment

This was shot on a Nikkon D200 with a Nikkor "nifty fifty" 50mm, f 1.8 prime lens. This was handheld.

Inspiration

This is part of a project I started earlier this year. I wanted to collect skies. I've spent so much of my time looking forward, backward, into every nook and cranny I can see to try to find a potential image. It suddenly dawned on me to start looking up. Every sky is different, even from moment to moment. This sunset was changing rapidly, so I had to hurry.

Editing

Since I didn't have a wide angle lens, I had to stitch three photos together. With the light changing, it was a bit of a challenge to adjust the brightness of each to match the other, but I feel good that I can't see where the seams are. I also boosted the vibrance a little in post, and boosted the magenta saturation just a tad.

In my camera bag

I have the above mentioned as my go to favorite. I also have a Nikkor 70mm-200mm 4.5-5.6 zoom. Of course, I keep an assortment of backup batteries, extra cards, lens cloth, etc. on hand. I have a flash that I can trigger or put on the camera. I also always carry my old Panasonic DMC FZ20 camera "just in case". I don't ever want to be in a situation where I miss a photo opportunity because my equipment failed, so I keep that as a back up. Other than that, I make sure I always have my business cards with me!

Feedback

Not really, as I feel I am still/always learning. I discard more images than I keep, so until that turns around, I'm hesitant to give advice. I will say, though, don't forget to look up!
