The photo was taken at Boscobel Bed and Breakfast , North West Coast of Tasmania. Tasmania is one of the most beautiful places to take wedding photos. I quite often still get asked to travel from Melbourne to Tasmania to take amazing outdoor wedding photos.Time
This photo is still one of my favourite wedding photos. I often walk around capturing a wedding with a touch of a journalistic feel. My approach is mainly contemporary with classic which has taken me a few years to master. But the natural candid shots are always the best. I spotted Abbey and Gracey playing with bubbles in the sun while all the family photos were getting taken. I quickly turned around while everyone was organising themselves and click! It is so important never to miss a moment in a wedding!Lighting
I always know exactly how I want an image to look and how I will edit it later when I am taking it. I never forget! Even when I am going to be taking over 500 shots for a wedding I will know what style the whole wedding will have. This wedding had a very light , bright and slightly mystical feel to it. The ceremony was held in the Boscobel gardens , almost like a fairy garden. So I decided to make the photos look softer to have the sun coming from behind my subjects to give it the mystical feeling.Equipment
This was shot with a 5D Mark ii , 24-70mm lens.Inspiration
My inspiration for most photos I take is from the time I was working as a photo journalist. I love contemporary photography and I still have the ability naturally to think in a journalistic way. Many years of studying other photographers that have these two styles has created a second nature for me to achieve these images. My favourite photo journalist when I first started studying photography and journalism was Kevin Carter, 'The Vulture and The Little Girl'. If you know the true story behind his photo and the controversy it had caused this is a very successful photo in every way. Diane Arbus was amazing at capturing a split second moment in her street photography style. Annie Leibovitz became a little more of a glorified photographer but was a huge inspiration for me. All of these styles of photography (and many more) have had a huge impact and influence on me to develop my own style.Editing
I am very much into post processing that is what will give a photographers photos impact. I create my own style of editing , I make my own layers and colour mixes. It is important to know photo shop very well. In this photo I wanted a yellowish tone to give it the mystical feeling with the sun light. I also added a glow layer to it. I always keep an editing diary so I can go back and create the image again. Very important when you make up your own layers! In my camera bag
I always have a back up of all batteries and another camera for weddings. If you are travelling interstate or 4 hours away to a wedding you must have back up equipment. My must haves in my bag are , Canon 24-70mm lens, 70-200mm and 85mm 1.2.Feedback
My advice to anyone out there that would like to work with having the sun in their photos from behind is make the sun your friend not your enemy! Work with the light instead of against it. A lot of photos have lens flare in them, which I think gives you the feeling of the sun beaming down on you. Make sure your ISO is set right on a sunny day . Do not go over 400! Shutter speed and aperture must be faster. I move around a lot with the sun, you may be able to shade it with a tree near by or your subjects them selves. You can always see in your view finder where that perfect spot is for the sun to hit.
