Dramatic sky and superb details on the rigging of the ship. Well done Debbie.

Love it ! Did you go aboard ? Next time, level your horizon (key to good photography & to avoid sea sickness - haha !) Is this a permanent fixture in your area, or was it only docked there shortly ? Nice work BMP (Deb), a Favorite for sure ! ! ! ~ ~ ~ Jerry

Behind The Lens

Location

This Photograph was taken in 2013 at 'The Hard' in Portsmouth. I remember I was testing out the features on my new 'point and shoot' camera. As I usually use a SLR or Compact System camera I was really please with the results from this 'pocket' camera.

Time

This was taken late afternoon in December 2013.

Lighting

As the day was a typical grey winters day in the UK I decided to try out a different modes on the camera and liked the result I got from the impressive arts mode. This shot with the dark clouds behind the ship seems to given the scene more depth. A different twist on a regularly photographed taken scene.

Equipment

The camera was a Panasonic DMC FT25.

Inspiration

Living in a beautiful Naval town like Portsmouth I never get bored with taking photographs of the many historical attractions on show, this ship in particular is moored in the main harbour and somehow always looks majestic even on the grayish of days.

Editing

In my camera bag

I always carry my Panasonic DMC FT25 as it sits nicely in my pocket or purse, great for shoot and point pictures on nights out or at the beach as waterproof, simply needs turning on. In my camera pack is always my Panasonic DMC-FZ330 a great easy to use camera, especially from a moving vehicle or when walking, it's fairly light to carry and takes some fantastic pictures, in addition I love the 4K application as it allows me to take 'busts of pictures' say of fast moving objects i.e. sea, animals, planes etc, which I can then breakdown into separate photographs. For more landscape or fixed photographs I also carry my Panasonic DMC-G6 with a 45-150 0.9m/3.0ft -00 interchangeable lens, again light weight, easy to use with some amazing results. Finally I always pack a bunch of filters, my Ultrapod II, charger and basic cleaning equipment.

Feedback

For me photography is about capturing the moment, taking a snap shot of what I see there and then, be it a single subject or a scene, and in doing so I hopefully produce a picture that shows that moment both in focus and with a degree of detail. I'm certainly not the most skilled at dealing with different lighting (brightness or low light), so trying different modes can sometimes help me to at least produce a half decent picture. My advise to others is don't be afraid to experiment, learn how to use your camera and its features to take photographs of subjects and scene that you wish to capture, try different modes, different angles, even try setting up your own settings, and remember everyone sees things different, its what you see that counts in your photographs.
