Congratulations, Jerry. I was almost sure, I commented on this photograph before. Anyway, it's very unique and beautiful.

Location
This image was made at Bosque de Apache a wildlife preserve in New Mexico USA 90 miles south of Albuquerque.Time
The temperature was -10f with a little wind waiting for the fly in. I don't remember the exact time but it was just before sunrise one day in January 2012 when the birds started to arrive when I made this image.Lighting
The lighting is what makes this image. What happen, is that there was a mist from a small body of water that was being backlit by the beautiful orange glow from the sky in the background which lasted about 10 minutes.Equipment
The image was made with a Canon 20d and a 500mm lens on a tripod.Inspiration
The lighting is what inspired me to make this image along with the Sand Hill Cranes and Snow Geese sitting in the freezing water as well as the silhouettes of the Sand Hill Cranes arriving from a long night in safe harbor.Editing
I post-processed this image in Lightroom mainly to remove the noise and boost the yellows and oranges. In my camera bag
I did not have much other equipment with me other than a Canon 100-400mm zoom and an 1.2x extender.Feedback
I have returned to Bosque de Apache several times and have never found the same conditions. My sense is when one has a great opportunity to make images in rare occasions as I did at Bosque on my first visit there, s/he should make as many images as possible and not do as i did, i.e., I made five images like this one.
