After getting a new camera I spent a huge time wandering my backyard taking photos of anything and everything. I had barely touched a camera in years so I probably went a bit overboard.Time
Around 6pm on a lovely summer day.Lighting
It was a beautiful evening with lovely soft light.Equipment
This was shot on a Sony Nex-3 with a standard 16-50mm kit lens. No flash, tripod or anything.Inspiration
I was wandering the backyard looking for macro opportunities. Everywhere I went the cat followed, at a distance of course. I fired of a few shots while trying to get closer and closer. Mostly I got some very unflattering posterior shots. She really didn't want me photographing her that day. She's quite a looker and I've been trying to get a photo that accurately shows how amazing her eyes look but that cat never cooperates.Editing
I can't remember what exactly I did and I appear to have lost the original. However I do remember not having to do much other than cropping and stripping the colour from the background so her eyes would pop.In my camera bag
I'm a newbie with a very small budget. I only have an entry level camera at the moment and a few cheap pieces for now. Including a tripod and polarising filter that desperately need replacing. I'm paranoid about keeping my gear clean so I always have a few microfibre cloths, a blower and soft bristled brush.Feedback
Have a load of patience if you want to photograph animals. All my experience involves my own cats and even they can be infuriating when trying to get the shot your after. Also go with the flow. You never know what you'll get when working with beasties but the surprises they throw at you could result in a better images than you were after.
