Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at Hamilton Pool Nature Preserve in Austin, Texas. It's a beautiful spot in Travis County Park. A wild and awesome place where you can walk alone and find yourself. I walk around the cave and this is the highest spot under the sloping ground.

Time

It was a cloudy and rainy summer day. I was outside walking by my own taking some shots. It was the first time at Hamilton pool. After few minutes of walking at the end of the trail there it was, this natural beauty coming out of nowhere.

Lighting

Typically you can find a lot of pictures of Hamilton pool in a sunny day with blu water and shinning waterfall. However I think this kind of light gives a better touch of wilderness at this place. It seems like a primitive spot where the humanity has began.

Equipment

I used a Canon 1100d Camera with a 18-55 lens. Very basic equipment, very light and simple so you can focus on the composition. Unfortunately no tripod, it was very hard to be stable for a long time to achieve the silky effect of the waterfall.

Inspiration

I always try to capture the nature and its beauty. I like to find remote trail and walk like old scouts finding the right spot to take a shot. This time was a little bit different, Hamilton pool is a touristic place and I didn't expect to find something similar. It was like falling in a movie, I was waiting for a T-Rex coming down. I think this soft-dark light with the cave surrounding all the place gives the idea of a wild and primitive site.

Editing

I like to keep the photo as simple as possible. I like the natural colours so I just balanced the saturation and increased the contrast. Unfortunately I didn't have the tripod with me otherwise I would take more shots with different exposure and the sum all of them for HDR picture.

In my camera bag

From my point of view the equipment should be minimal. Most of the great photographer used the same 50mm lens for years for all kind of shots. So, why not? Why we shouldn't focus only on the composition? Why we should try to change the lens, the camera or the flash and maybe miss the right moment? So typically I have my camera a Canon 1100D, my first lens a 18-55mm 3.5:5.6 stabilised, a couples of filters and the tripod (if I remember it). Just basic stuff!

Feedback

It's very difficult to find spots like this, but when you find one it's important to focus on what kind of feeling you want to transmit. Take your time, it is not an action shot. Think, look around and be part of the scene. Take some shots to test the light and then focus on the composition. Typically the best moment for this kind of shots is at sunrise or sunset but in a cloudy day you can exploit every moment.
