Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was take just outside of Santa Barbara CA. The ocean presents countless opportunities for iconic photos. Fog, waves, and fishing boats... Not to mention a newly risen sun. Great things at which to aim a camera.

Time

It was taken a half hour or so after the sun rose over the mountains.

Lighting

I wanted it to look cold and maybe a bit lonely. But the sun bleeding through the marine layer offers hope for a sunny day.

Equipment

Shot on a Nikon D7000, handheld.

Inspiration

The glow of the sun reflected in the surf. The single fishing boat in the distance.

Editing

Photo was originally taken in RAW. De-saturated it and played with the levels in Photoshop.

In my camera bag

Very little. My Nikon... a couple lenses. I most often use a light 70-300 mm lens. I rely mostly on my eyes and editing skills.

Feedback

When I look at professional photos (National Geographic, for instance), I think: "I could take that picture if I were only there!" Being there is number 1. Couldn't have taken this photo (or any of them I've taken) if I weren't there with my camera. Oh... and make sure your lens and camera are clean. Then you won't leave a dust spot, like I did in this photo.
