The photo was taken in Langkawi, Malaysia during a holiday with my family. It wasn't long after i had purchased my first DSLR camera and was still finding my way around the settings and compositions of shots.Time
It was in the early evening, maybe around 6pm in October. I had seen these rocks a few days previous and the whole area was very rugged and interesting.Lighting
The sunsets here were very spectacular, when it wasn't raining which it did fairly regularly around sundown being a tropical area. It had rained a short time earlier which quickly died in clouds of steam off of any stone or concrete surfaces. The lighting was still quite bright and the few remaining rain clouds still hung in the sky giving some great contrast.Equipment
I used my Canon 50D with a Sigma 18-125mm lens. The camera was free heldInspiration
Like lots of others, i am a sucker for a great sunset or sunrise and will always try to capture an image if i have my camera to hand, which invariably i do. At the time i was photographing almost everything, trying different setting, apertures, etc. to see what effect the changes make.Editing
There was very little post processing done on this image, i was still getting to grips with the whole process and was using the MS photo tools on my pc. I would have liked to have brought out more orange sky reflection in the sea. I may re-edit this image in photoshop; still have a backlog of images to deal with so it will have to wait for now.In my camera bag
Since my beloved 50D fell foul of a security check at the Louvre and fell from my camera bag, i now own an 80D which i am still getting to grips with. I have been using a canon 15-85mm lens now for a couple of years and have always been impressed with how versatile it is. I also carry a canon 50mm prime and a Sigma 55-200mm which i use with the Kenko extension tube set. A gorilla grip is always at hand along with a 430 speedlite and several spare batteries.Feedback
I would say i am still learning but a few things i will always do when i go out with my camera to hand. Shoot in raw, it gives so much more flexibility when post processing Take several images, not just one. Change the depth of field and focus point. With bright backgrounds such as this, underexpose the image slightly, its easier the bring exposure up in Image Raw or Photoshop then to recover blown out whites.
