Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken during a visit back to my home town of Mildura, in North West of Victoria, Australia. The place of choice was the old Mildura Homestead which is located on the banks of the magnificent Murray River. The homestead showcases the history of the Mildura and features many original old buildings including this old horse stable.

Time

I had not long purchased this camera after realising I had visited one too many great destinations over the last few years and only my memory to record them. I am very much an amateur at this new hobby, so while filling in time while waiting to meet a friend for lunch, i thought would start to explore how best to start taking some interesting photos. Unfortunately being Middle of the day and mid summer in Mildura, where blue sky and searing heat is the norm, most of the photos I took where, how do I put it, just plain boring. However this soon started to change when I came across the old horse stables.

Lighting

To my surprise the baking sun actually worked to my advantage in this setting, being an old horse stable, the building was constructed of old rough sawn timber slabs, posts and old corrugated iron for the roof. This enabled the sunlight to leech through all the gaps in the building, and bath the interior with a honey type of hue from the natural color of the timber

Equipment

The Camera I used is a Samsung Galaxy Smart Camera Model EK-GC100, with a small tripod, auto white balance setting, which I now know how to set manually, and rich tone setting.

Inspiration

I love how a simple photo can take you places, evoke memories and thoughts about what it must have been like to have lived a life at this particular moment in time. This particular photo ended up having some great depth to it, but my real inspiration came from the filtered light through the old slab walls.

Editing

No post processing was done on this picture, it is exactly the way the old horse stables was during this particular visir

In my camera bag

The only peices of equipment I have in my bag is the Samsang Galaxy camera, a small tripod that extentsmout to about 20cm, a lence brush kit and small micro Fibre cleaning cloth.

Feedback

Sometimes the best photos can present themselves to you when you least expect it. Be prepared to take hundreds or more of bad photos, learn from them, somtimes take the least obvious photo that you first see, to think outside the square with the composition, ask oneself what story am I trying to tell. Most of all have fun
