Behind The Lens
Location
I was exploring the Exchange District in Winnipeg, Canada when i came across this modern bakery in late 19th century building.Time
I arrived at Portage and Main at about 8:00 AM, and started taking photographs. I arrived at this bakery around 10:30 AM.Lighting
I wanted to use the morning light to illuminate my subjects. This bakery was illuminated by indirect sunlight, it was fantastic! No bright sunlit areas and no deep shadows, just a beautiful even light.Equipment
I used a Nikon D300S with a 16-85mm lens to take this photograph.Inspiration
As I was walking by this bakery the ingredients in the window caught my eye, and I knew this would be the best photograph of the day. As I was debating the best composition, I noticed the reflection of the building across the street. Even though I had a polarizing filter with me, I decided this would be a stronger image with the reflections in the window.Editing
I did very little post-processing. Other than slight colour adjustments, I straightened the wall.In my camera bag
Other than my camera, I usually carry 2 or 3 lenses, a speedlight, remote trigger, polarizing and ND filters, spare memory cards and batteries.Feedback
Reflective surfaces are a challenge for photographers, and they are generally viewed as a bad element in a photograph. Despite this, don't be afraid to include reflections in your photographs. A polarizing filter can be used to manage reflections, glare and improve colour saturation.
