Behind The Lens

Location

This is a shot looking over the entrance to Lyttleton Port just outside Christchurch in New Zealand. I was up on the Port hills to try and get a decent view of a few other things when I spotted this shot.

Time

It was shot in late Autumn so thankfully I didn't have to be there too early, it was closer to 7am by the time the light was looking better and I got this.

Lighting

New Zealand has a light quality which is a bit special I think, it can go from being lovely and soft to harsh almost in an instant. I was lucky that this mornings pretty clear with a night warm light

Equipment

I shoot a Canon, this is from my 50D with the 24-105L on it shot at the 24 end of the lens firmly mounted on my tripod and weight for stability. I always shot my landscapes with the camera in mirror lock up mode to avoid mirror shake and use a remote shutter release as well just to remove any chance of me rocking the camera. I also used an ND grad just to pull down the sky a little to try and get more balance there.

Inspiration

I just loved the light that was starting to wander over the hills and the rocks in the foreground gave it a bit of interest.

Editing

I tend to do minimal post processing, I shoot everything in RAW and then pull it into Lightroom as my catalogue but then kick it out to Photoshop CC and NIK for any tweaking. Here I didn't do too much, I pulled out some shadows and added some detail with NIK software then finished with a little sharpening and hit save

In my camera bag

Camera - Canon 50D, Lenses Canon 24-105L, canon 50mm prime (love this wee lens) Tamron 10-24 and depending on what I'm shooting I may drag along my Sigma 50-500 which is a beast of a lens and gives a fantastic saturation to reds. Filters I use Cokin slot filters so I have a range of ND grats plus I'm playing with a variable ND at the moment, my trustry Polerising filter, shutter release, 5 in one reflector for those times where you want a little more light in the immediate foreground, spare batteries - always need spares!!! lens cleaning equipment and my speedlite flash gun.

Feedback

The best advice I can give is just be there, get out and find places that make you go wow or I bet that looks great in the right light, go figure out what time of day, month, year that light will hit and keep going back and back.
