Behind The Lens

Location

This shot of the Asbury Park Convention Center in New Jersey was taken prior to the devastation of Hurricane Sandy.

Time

It was a cool and overcast fall day, shortly after noon, which is one of my favorite times for a walk on the beach. Fall days are quiet down the shore as they are usually quite tranquil.

Lighting

The lighting was overcast as a pressure system was moving up the coast when I came across a school of seagulls foraging the sand for food.

Equipment

Casio EX-7120 handheld at f/8

Inspiration

I was out walking the dogs with my brother when we came across the school of birds foraging, one of the younger pups decided to investigate which sent the birds in motion. I didn't have my main gear with me, but my little point-and-shoot was ready in my pocket as always, and just goes to show that the best camera is the one you carry.

Editing

Minimal contrast adjustments and cropping in Lightroom 4

In my camera bag

Normally I have my Rebel XT with 50mm and polarizer, but this day I was only armed with a point and shoot compact Casio Exilim.

Feedback

Trust your instincts, and know your equipment. Being at the right place and time does nothing if you aren't quick enough to act.
