The north coastal breezes keep the air clear and clean most all the time.Equipment
No flash, no tripod, just hand held Canon Rebel and sneakers to get close.Inspiration
The natural beauty of the contrast in colors and a long time interest in Butterflies such as the Monarch pictured here. Their migration pattern along the coast is always intricate and designed around food plants for the adult (as pictured) and milkweed for the females to place their eggs for the convenience of the soon to be born caterpillars.Editing
No, simply stumbled on a great photo op. and rushed to take advantage. In my camera bag
A 70-300mm lens, cleaning equipment as I constantly seem to put my fingerprints on the glass and an 18-135mm for most opportunities.Feedback
The only sure thing with Butterflies is to get used to their patterns of flights, favorite foods and a recognition through practice of the distance and speed to which they can be approached. Generally speaking they are more settled later in the afternoon on warm sunny days. Don't rush as they are fairly easily spooked by predatory movements that they perceive. Once feeding, they tend to be more self absorbed. Watch for their proboscis to extend into the flowers and count the few seconds they remain at each blossom. If they are laying eggs, watch the hovering and pattern of distribution on a specific plant and be aware as to other similar plants in the vicinity on which to keep an eye.
