Behind The Lens

Location

This image was taken in Kensington Gardens, London, W1.

Time

The image was taken as part of my homework for a short ten week DSLR course in February. It was a bright sunny day and roughly mid afternoon.

Lighting

It was a really nice bright February afternoon and I deliberately picked a spot near the trees but out of their shade.

Equipment

I had recently bought my first "Grown up Camera" and had enrolled on a ten week course lasting a few hours one day a week. For this shot I was using a Canon EOS Rebel T3i / 600D. I was advised that if I wanted to upgrade any kit I should look at lenses first. For this shot I used a Canon 16-35mm lens. I tried to capture the shot a few times and wanted a low depth of field. I used an aperture of f/3.5. Anything less made the image too soft. It was a bright day so the ISO was set at 200. Although the squirrels in Kensington Gardens are relatively tame, they were still a bit flighty. Exposure was 1/1000. I had no tripod and laid on my stomach on the grass (Yes I got a bit wet).

Inspiration

As part of a ten week course I had to produce homework. This image was taken as part of a set of six that had to all be linked and showing the different camera skills we had learned.

Editing

I made some slight adjustments reducing colour saturation and vibrance.

In my camera bag

At the time I took this image I had my Canon T3i with a 18-55 kit lens. The camera package also came with a 70-200 mm lens. Plus my new Canon 16-35mm lens.

Feedback

As a relatively new comer to photography there was a bit of trial and error, being prepared to take a number of shots and patience. Take some extra nuts! I was very surprised how fast they went once I had set up the shot.
