No need for an introduction to this iconic art piece in Civic – thing is, I’m pretty sure I’ve seen some Magpies around that are comparable to this size! And for those who don’t know, this is Big Swoop—it's hard to miss! It shows a giant magpie pecking at a chip. This sculpture is special because it's a symbol of the area, and it was made by a local artist named Yanni Pounartzis.
Big Swoop is quite big, weighing half a tonne and standing 2.4 metres tall and 3.5 metres long. It was put up in Garema Place in March 2022 but sadly got damaged soon after by vandals. However, it was fixed and brought back in December 2022, and now it's a permanent part of the area.
The sculpture is so famous that it was chosen to be on a special coin and stamp set in 2023. It's now considered one of Australia's "big things," like the Big Banana or the Big Pineapple
