My work remains rooted in engineering. It’s the hidden technology that interests me, the things that surround us that you never really notice until they reveal themselves in that single moment. Living near Avonmouth for most of my life, allowed me to explore this alien industrial landscape of structures and factories that sit in a vista untouched for thousands of years. It was sunrise early in the morning, the wind was non-existent, the tide was high, and the power station was venting steam from its turbines after producing electricity for the early morning rush hour. This friendly mushroom cloud of water vapor always catches my eye, and constantly plays in my head for a possible future sculpture. I liked the way the painterly foreground gives the photo a frame to view the mist of distant ethereal structures as a vast mushroom cloud rises above the land.
