Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in Perkins Cove in Ogunquit, Maine.

Time

This photograph was taken around 7:30 pm. The Silver Lining Sailboat had just left the dock in Perkins Cove, so I turned around, walked across the cove, and waited for the sailboat to come around where the rocks were in front of me. I had no tripod, so I balanced my camera on the rocks the best I could and shot this photograph. This was taken on July 2, 2018.

Lighting

The sky was just beginning to get some colors in it, so I began snapping a few shots using different apertures. I settled on when the sky changed to pink hues and liked this one the best.

Equipment

This was shot using a Canon EOS 6D camera with a 105mm lens, ISO 100, Aperature of f/10, and shutter speed of 1/640 sec. No tripod was used as I did not have one with me.

Inspiration

I love walking down to Perkins Cove in Ogunquit before sunrise. I may walk along the Marginal Way to get there or along Shore Road. I never know what will catch my eye to photograph. It could be the waves going over the rocks, or some sailboats. There are typically several at that time of day. Once I got to Perkins Cove and saw the Silver Lining leaving for the last sail of the day (Sunset Cruise), I waited for the sky to do its magic. That is when I walked around to the tall rocks and used them for balancing, due to no tripod. Then, I began shooting several times to see which ones I liked better.

Editing

I used Lightroom Classic for post-processing and always begin with the RAW image. Using some of the settings in Lightroom Classic, I used the Adaptive Sky setting and changed it to Sunset, used the Season Summer preset of SM09 and it made the image pop a bit more.

In my camera bag

I was using the Canon EOS 6D camera, when I shot this photograph. Along with that, I purchased my first Canon Mirrorless camera the EOS RP and had that in my camera bag. I pack a Canon EF 100 - 200 mm lens, a RF 24 - 105mm lens which is a pretty multipurpose lens. I carry a neutral density filter, circular polarizer, a couple of other filters in my bag, and a tripod. In 2023, I sold my EOS 6D and have gone totally Canon Mirrorless now. So in my bag now, I have the Canon EOS RP and Canon EOS R6 Mark II. I just purchased a Canon RF 14 - 35 wide angle lens for some f my landscape photography. Also, I carry the Canon Ring Mount adapter to use the EF 100 - 200mm lens, because it is an EF style lens and the Canon Mirrorless cameras take the RF style lens.

Feedback

Because I am a landscape photographer living in New England, I need to have patience on a trip. The weather is constantly changing, hence I need to be prepared to switch gears quickly. I need two cameras, several lenses, some filters, and a tripod. For me, dawn and dusk are key moments. I love the golden hour and blue hour. I absolutely love shooting sunrise and waiting for the changes that take place in the sky just before the sun rises. The colors are hopefully spectacular. At least that is what landscape photographers strive for.
