Old lock bridge in Tienen with building for the lock keeper
The old lock bridge in Tienen is a beautiful example of historic architecture. The bridge was originally built to allow ships to pass over the Grote Gete river. In the past it was common to build a building for the lock keeper, as is also the case here. This building served as a residence for the lock keeper, who was responsible for opening and closing the lock gates to regulate the water level and thus allow the boats to sail safely through the lock. Today the lock is no longer in use for shipping, but the bridge and the lock keeper's building are still an important part of Tienen's historical heritage and are popular with tourists and residents.
