Portrait taken in Cape Town, South Africa, March 2023. The Bo-Kaap area, formerly known as the Malay Quarter is full of these brightly coloured houses. Why? In the 1760’s Cape Dutch and Georgian rental houses were built and leased to slaves… the rule was houses aligned by cobbled roads had to be painted white. When the rule was lifted and the slaves were able to purchase them, they decided to paint them in the brightest colours possible as a metaphor for freedom.
