Behind The Lens

Location

I have taken this photo at our local beach - Burns Beach, Perth in Western Australia.

Time

I love going down to the beach after a hard day's work to reflect a bit and to also enjoy the sun-set. I find this time of the day to be very peaceful and it is also the time of the day when we are spoilt with beautiful colours.

Lighting

I always keep an eye on the clouds during the day and this was also one of those afternoons where some high-clouds formed on the horizon and eventually treated us with some spectacular colours.

Equipment

For this photo, I have used my Canon 5DMkV1 DSLR camera, fitted with a 24 - 70mm canon lens mounted on a Manfroto tri-pod. I have also used a Nisi Circular Polarised Filter to cut through some of the reflections, combined with a graduated filter to balance the light from the bright sky with the foreground.

Inspiration

I love visiting this particular beach as the beach changes constantly and exposing/covering rocks as a result of storms, wind and sea-current which provides for new compositions every time I visit this location.

Editing

I usually edit my photos in Lightroom. I this photo, I have bumped up the exposure in the foreground a bit in order to bring out some of the details in the rocks and also increased the whites to emphasise the movement of the water on the beach.

In my camera bag

I own three Canon camera bodies and numerous lenses. They are all too heavy to carry in one bag so, I normally do a bit planning before a shoot in order to avoid carrying too much equipment in my bag. When going down to beach, I will carry one body, one lens, my filter set, tripod and a remote shutter release.

Feedback

Shoot as often as you can, know your equipment and have fun.
