Location
This was the air show at Jones Beach on Memorial Day 2023. I was on the boardwalk watching this jump through my view finder snapping photos as the image moved across the sky.Time
This part of the day was mid morning on a beautiful dayLighting
I was shooting into the bright sky, so I had the bright sky to deal with. I let the jumpers go into silhouette, but made sure the Flag was visible.Equipment
I was shooting with a Nikon Z6ii set on program with a Nikon 24-200mm zoom. The distance to the subject was to far. But I knew the resolution was good enough to use a fraction of the image to make a print.Inspiration
It was a holiday weekend with an Air Show, I don’t get get many chances each year to take action photos of planes, jets and parachutists. So I dealt with the crowds and traffic and went to the show for the photo-opt. .Editing
The action portion of the image was about a quarter of the image area, so I cropped away 75% of the image. I adjusted the sky color, sharpness and contrast. Then I arranged the image to create a sloping leading line with the red smoke.In my camera bag
These days I carry a lot less then I use to. I have my Nikon Z6ii, Nikon Z 24-200mm, Godox V1, spare batteries, lens cleaner, and spare memory cards.Feedback
In all honesty the 200mm is not long enough to capture this image. As it should be. As a result my Nikon 180-600mm was ordered and it is scheduled to arrive right around December 30, 2023. I expect better shots at my next air show. However, shoot with anything you have, with today’s cameras and software you can make a dramatic image to remember the day with.
