Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo at the 2023 World Canoe/Kayak Championship finals held on the Chattahoochee River in Columbus, Georgia, USA, on October 14, 2023.

Time

It was early afternoon close to 1 pm.

Lighting

It was taken in full sun, so no additional lighting was needed.

Equipment

I used a Canon T6 camera with an attached Canon EF 75-300mm telephoto zoom lens.

Inspiration

I admired the skill and determination required by these kayakers to achieve the level of ability they had acquired. I wanted to take photos that showed this, including the emotions that are a part of their experience and their interaction with the water.

Editing

Post-processing included adjusting the saturation and contrast to bring out colors and shading. In addition, some lighting adjustment and some sharpening was used.

In my camera bag

I try to keep things simple and include only the things that I may need based upon thinking ahead about the subjects and environment. Usually I have my camera, the Canon T6 or Nikon D5600, with normal and zoom lenses. Sometimes I will include an extra battery, charger and SD card, depending on the time that may be involved in the shoot.

Feedback

Kayaking is a very active sport with quick movements so using a fast shutter speed is important to getting a clean image. Also, keep in mind that lighting may require a lower f-stop so increased ISO settings may be required to support the higher shutter speed. Try to get as close to the action you can or by using a telephoto lens that needs to be kept steady for a clean shot. In this shot, the camera was hand-held, but a tripod may be needed depending how close you can get to the subjects.
