One of many nasty ambush predators lerking in the depths of the ocean, the Spotted Scorpionfish. The Scorpionfish blends with its rugged coral background as camouflage. It waits patiently until an unsuspecting fish swims by what looks like a harmless rock and 'gulp,' a sudden opening of the mouth, accelerating lunge, and it inhales its prey. In addition, the scorpionfish is covered with many sharp spines that contain a potent toxic venom. For humans, it's sting causes numbness or tingling that may last weeks after the encounter. Skin break throughs are sometimes severe enough to need surgery. A puncture to a person's chest or abdomen may lead to death....one of the most poisonous animals in the ocean.
