It's a pre-rut bachelor party for all these fine-looking bull elk. They are bulking up and finishing the final growth of the velvet on their antlers. Soon their comradery will be put on hold as they will begin to shed their velvet and begin sparing with one another for dibs on a harem.
P.S. This was a once in a lifetime sighting. I had gone out for a sunset shoot and only turned around to shoot in the opposite direction when I spotted this massive herd on the move across the fields. It was a total freak out moment as I had left my long lens on the front seat of my vehicle, mere steps away; but, one doesn't bolt for their lens unless one wants to spook the herd!
