At the end of summer in 2011 I did an indoor lingerie shoot with a pair of models. One of them also wanted some swimsuit shots so I booked her in for the next day. On the first day of October that model met me out at Blackrock on the Great Salt Lake, and she brought a friend who also wanted to get some pictures. That friend is Delaney Brunton the tall, slender model in this picture. Blackrock is a tall outcropping of the Oquirrh mountains and is about 2.5 miles West of the Salt Lake Marina. Just recently the trail that leads to it has been re-graded and smoothed, and some security fencing has been put up which now prevents vehicles from driving down directly to the Rock. Its a place I go to frequently for its variety of views and environments. Unfortunately, the water has receded away from the rocks, but with a few good years of snow and rain it will come back.Time
This was an afternoon shoot and it pushed into the early evening. We had great sunset skies that lasted a long time. For me the sun is never enough, and I use flash fill most of the time to get the colors really popping. For you technical people this was shot using a Canon EOS 30D, with a EF50mm f/1.4 lens, at ƒ/3.5, 1/500, ASA 100 and no flash. These days I shoot with a Cannon EOS 70D. That was a 50mm prime lens and now I also use a 24mm prime. Since I tend to put the light behind my models, I get a lot less lens flare or hazing with prime lenses.Lighting

After the shoot I used Adobe Lightroom to ingest and organize the pictures. The images from this day barely needed any adjustments in post.In my camera bag
These days my beat up old camera bag carries a Cannon 70D with its 50MM prime 1.4 lens equipped. My 24mm wide is in one compartment, sitting on top of a Cannon flash control unit. I also have an 18-55 EFS zoom that came with my old 30D. Then there are two Canon430 Speedlites. Miscellaneous stuff in the pockets are a pen and notepad, pocket knife, radio remote control, extra batteries, spare memory cards and a couple of polarized filters for those intense sun days.Feedback
The three of us had a fun time and there were several other noteworthy pictures taken that day. Basically, I got lucky this day. We were in the right place at the right time, and we were blessed with a breeze that kept the salt flies away and picked up her hair at just the right moment. Take a beautiful model to where the land meets the water at just the right time of day and you simply can’t go wrong!
