Behind The Lens

Location

I found this area by chance, it is situated near Deansgate in Manchester, it is part of the foundations of the overhead railway line.

Time

This was taken at 2pm on 8th June 2021. I went out on a photo hunt and came across this area, which I was delighted to have found. I knew immediately I wanted it sharp back to front and used f11. I tried a couple of shots from different angles, but it was when I moved myself fully to the left, was the moment I knew this was the shot.

Lighting

The light from the Sun was perfect with the way it was casting shadow from left to right to meet the right-hand side of the tunnel arch. It was very bright so as usual I exposed for the highlights and ensured my histogram was in good shape.

Equipment

I was using a Canon EOS R mirrorless with a 50mm 1.8 MkII.

Inspiration

It was an unexpected find, but I loved the look of the tunnel and when you’re looking for something interesting and find it, you must capture that moment, especially as the look and light were in perfect harmony.

Editing

Photoshop was used to crop and convert from colour to mono. A few tweaks in Camera Raw and a curves adjustment

In my camera bag

Canon Eos R, Canon 16-35 F4, 35 F2 IS, 70-200 F4, 50 1.8 MkII

Feedback

I was lucky on this day to have the light and the shadow in harmony; however, I tried various compositions, and they were ok but not quite right. If I had to give advice, do not be satisfied with the first shot, walk around the subject look at it from every angle, take a few shots, you may just find the one that sings.
