Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo on my home balcony with the glass door and wall as background. I am a self taught photographer and mainly photograph flowers in and around my home.

Time

I love using the sunlight as my lighting source. The morning and afternoon sun provide very different atmospheres. So this photo was taken with the sun setting on the west side of my home which provided that gold glow on the flower petals and in the water droplets.

Lighting

The sunlight is such a beautiful source of light , especially as it’s setting . It provides a light that showers its subjects in a warm golden jewel-like glow.

Equipment

I used a Nikon D5300 with a Nikon Micro 105mm f/2.8 lens .

Inspiration

I have found a love for photographing flowers specifically. I will take 500 photos of one flower from all perspectives and angles. Flower photography for me has now taken on a life of its own and I get endless joy out of finding a unique image.

Editing

I very seldom do any drastic post processing…. I usually focus on the highlights and shadows. And I do crop for the best composition.

In my camera bag

I only have one camera body, the Nikon D5300 which I bought as a beginner camera 5 years ago. I started with the 18-55mm lens 5 years ago but now only use my Nikon Micro 105mm f2.8. I also recently acquired a tripod which is great for obtaining nice sharp images

Feedback

Since I do mostly flower photography, I would advise anyone wanting to achieve beautiful flower photos is to make use of the natural light provided by the sunlight. Morning sunlight is fresh and bright whereas the setting sun will give your images a gorgeous golden glow. Also always take note of your background when photographing flowers as they can have a negative or positive impact on the outcome of the photo.
