Of the thirty active volcanic systems in Iceland, Hekla in South Iceland is one of the most active.
Hekla's last few eruptions occurred in 1970, 1980-81, 1991 and in 2000, which was pretty much once every 10 years. However, the volcano hasn't erupted in 23 years and is therefore now considered 'overdue' an eruption.
