Behind The Lens

Location

I am a fan of the photography in National Geographic and one of the photos which captured my imagination was the camera in the desert. At first glance you took the shadows to be the camels but it was their shadows. This was my attempt to recreate the effect.

Time

The trick was to get a flat background and the appropriate shadow length. And of course to be directly overhead. I used a drone.

Lighting

To give a shadow length equal to the person’s height the sun must be at an elevation of 45 degrees and for good contrast and clear sky is required.

Equipment

This was photographed using a DJI mini3pro drone

Inspiration

I am a fan of George Steinmetz who published the camels in the desert photo on National Geographic in 2005. He used a motorised paraglider. I didn’t have camels so I used people and a drone.

Editing

The photo was cropped and contrast enhanced in Lightroom to ensure an appropriately dark shadow

In my camera bag

I love my Olympus OM-1 especially with my favourite lens - the 40-150 f/2.8 pro But I also have my M1 mark 2 with 60mm macro

Feedback

The critical thing is to be able to photograph from directly above on a clear day. Time is best at mid morning or mid afternoon
