Behind The Lens

Location

I shot this photo walking out the door from work one day. It was the one day that I felt really strongly I needed to take my camera with me and keep it in the car. This is in southern Utah, not far from Bryce Canyon.

Time

I was getting off work in the evening in August. I walked out the door and there this rainbow was. You can bet I was glad I acted and took my camera with me to work that day.

Lighting

This is 100% natural light. The sun really did light up the clouds that day and the rain split the sunlight into the rainbow you see.

Equipment

I shot this photo using my Nikon D7200 with my Nikkor 18-55 mm lens. I handheld this shot so that was all the equipment I used.

Inspiration

This was a completely spontaneous and unplanned shoot. If it wasn't for me taking my camera with me to work, I would have missed out on it. Since I had my camera with, I had a great sky and a great foreground. All I needed was proper framing.

Editing

In post, this photo required just a bit of cropping as I don't have a lens which will currently cover the range between 55mm and 70mm. Then, I set to work enhancing the sky and making the rainbow arc really pop. I wanted the colors to jump off the page. After all, the rainbow is the star of the photo.

In my camera bag

I carry a Nikon D7200 rather permanently attached to a Custom Brackets Digital Pro-E flash bracket. I love the ease which this high end flash bracket allows me to switch from landscape to portrait mode on a tripod and back again. It makes life in the field so much easier for me. I've even modified/upgraded it to handle my Arca-Swiss setup and pack better in my bag. My go-to lenses are the Nikkor 18-55mm kit lens and a Tamron 70-300mm telephoto lens with 1:2 macro capabilities. These have served me faithfully for several years in photography. I also pack a Nikkor 50mm prime for those times when I need f/1.8 and a Nikon 60mm prime macro lens for when I want to go full blown macro on a photo. My Hoodman hood-loupe, highly recommended by Scott Kelby, also goes with me. With it, I can see what my camera screen is showing me even in exceedingly bright light which would otherwise prevent me viewing my newly taken photos. My sling bag does get heavy with all this gear, but I know that I'm prepared for all kinds of photo opportunities. I added the Cotton Carrier system to better enable my spontaneous photography style in the field. I have the G2 Skout, the belt, and the Strap Shot. Also, I added the L-bracket for compatibility with my Arca-Swiss compatible Manfrotto XPro ballhead.

Feedback

As this shot was unplanned and spontaneous, giving the right advice is a matter of perspective. If you feel you should bring your camera with you, and it isn't a massive inconvenience or liability, then bring it. Nothing may come of it, but you never know. I could have left my camera at home and missed out on this shot. But I didn't.
