Behind The Lens

Location

Churchill river in Saskatchewan CA feeds into Otter lake at this location.

Time

Mid day early June

Lighting

Lighting was perfect for this photo this day. No smoke from forest fires and great clouds looking to be captured!

Equipment

Pentax K-7 with a Pentax 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 SMC PENTAX-DA ED AL IF DC WR Autofocus APS-C Lens. I'm stuck on Pentex since my film days in the later 1970's. All my old K mount film lenses work with my Pentax Digital cameras. There are some limitations but really easy to work around. Lots of bargain lenses out there can be found.

Inspiration

I'm old school. Would use film if it was not so time consuming to develop and then print. Digital is easier but the quality is a bit less. Saving my pennies to move to a med format digital next year. I had been by this location several times but the clouds were not "right". This day was perfect. Years of film 35mm and 4x5 B&W photography my minds eye sees in B&W. Reading up on classic Photography (Zone System) and you can learn a lot about "seeing" the photo before you take it. Anyone can blast away digitally and pic the one out of 100. Think FILM and you only have 36 shots to a roll or 2 shots to a plate holder! Slow down , enjoy the moment and find "the picture".

Editing

Very little. Mostly tweak the contrast just a little or brightness if needed.

In my camera bag

My standard bag is my Pentax K-7 with a Pentax 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 SMC PENTAX-DA ED AL IF DC WR lens and a rare Pentax CAT lens 400mm to 600mm. Always have a Gossen Luna-Pro Light Meter as well (hold over from my film days) and sometimes have a Pentax AF-540FGZ Flash.

Feedback

Know the location, time of year, weather conditions and remember what you saw in your minds eye. You may have to make several trips to get things right. Not all photos just happen. I'm not a fan of manipulating images post processing. I feel it becomes digital art verses true photography. A bit of cropping or a bump on the brightness or contrast are all traditional post processing that was done in a darkroom with film. All other edits become a digital art, not bad but no true to photography.
