I took this photo a few years ago while on holidays in Cairns Australia. I was staying with friends at their home and we visited the Cairns Botanical Gardens one sunny and hot day. It was like walking around a tropical oasis, lush green colors and bold and vibrant colours of tropical flowers everywhere. As a garden enthusiast I was in heaven! I don't know the name of this beautiful plant, but it was like a huge palm with the flowers dangling low to the ground, they were a deep red colour. Being an Artist and designer I was enthralled by its form, textures and colour contrasts. I decided to manipulate the image to black and white and was amazed at the bold image which showed off the textures of the leaves and unusual form of the flowers. One of my favourite photos!!Time
It was approximately 3pm when I took the photo in an area that was shady and cool.Lighting
The plant was in a shady area at the gardens, so I looked until I could find the best light for the original photo which was in colour.Equipment
I actually used my phone on the day I believe, not my Nikon.Inspiration
I took this photo because I loved the plant and flower, but I made sure I focused on the diagonals in view because that added to the real interesting aspect of the image.Editing
Post processing was simple, just manipulated the image to black and white, trying to get the best contrasts and shadows to create the final image. In my camera bag
I normally travel with one of my Nikon Cameras and my iphone and use either or both.Feedback
I just recall trying to include the natural diagonals within the view I was looking at. I searched for a few minutes to find the the best visual I could find and then took the photo. It is worth taking your time to get an interesting or different style of photo.
