THE SCENE ISLAND. HIDDEN IN THE FOG. FREEZING. TOTAL SILENCE. THE SEA.
In addition to the Hirschau peninsula, on which the world-famous pilgrimage church of Sankt Bartholomä stands, there is another real island in Königssee: Christlieger. With a length of 61 m and a width of 26 m, the island is very small. Very daring swim to her, however, the water temperature of the lake prevents many of these attempts in the early stages. On a hill on the island stands a 1.80 m high statue of St. John of Nepomuk, the patron saint of boatmen and raftsmen. The statue and its pedestal were erected on Christlieger after a boat capsized at this point in 1771. All 4 occupants were rescued at the last second. Since the statue was erected, the island has also been called John Island. Below the platform on which the statue rests is a grotto. Access to it is blocked by a lattice. The exact origin of the grotto is unknown.
