Took this photo September 27th, 2020 in the corn fields outlining a sunflower field in Elora, ON.Time
This was taken at 3:28pm on a fall day that had been partly-sunny (the optimistic "partly-cloudy")!Lighting
I love overcast lighting when shooting outdoors in the open. If I'm amidst trees I want that open sun to get strong shadows through the foliage, but this shot was blessed with mostly overcast lighting for the wider, consistent quality.Equipment
Camera: Canon EOS 6D Lens: Canon 50mm 1/1000 sec f/1.8 ISO 100Inspiration
Trying to take a great picture of my partner is always inspiration enough, but this was our first real outing together during the pandemic. The setting of the deep rows of corn is so removed from our cityscape that it was a much-missed opportunity to play that we explored together. I appreciate the smothering yet comforting height of the corn with the calico effect of the healthy and dried leaves; it is a beautiful canvas, and my partner's red top opposing the green leaves is wonderful for pulling the eyes centre to be unseen in the field with us. Even though we can not escape the realities of the pandemic, hiding in a moment that made it feel like the pandemic couldn't find us was really lovely.Editing
There was fairly minimal work done in post in Adobe Lightroom. The majority of contrast/highlights/blacks are within the +/- 7 range, and the steepest adjustment are my shadows/whites coming in around +/- 23. Pulled back a bit on saturation but amplified the vibrancy of the colours. Introduced a gentle, feathered vignette to complement the encroaching framing effects that appeared naturally with such an open aperture on the 50mm.In my camera bag
It has changed in the 2.5 years since I took this photo! Then: Canon 6D, 24-105mm, 50mm. Now: Add on a Canon 5D Mark III with a 70-200mm!Feedback
I'll ask my partner if she's interested in modelling again. ;) Explore those open aperture settings and see how a fixed lens changes your approach to a subject! I love working with f/1.8 - f/5.6 and the depth-perception it offers while staying crisp on the point of focus.
