Behind The Lens

Location

I took the photo at a local animal farm, the owls were sheltered away in the shade & as I walked past they came out into the light with these big yellow eyes - it was a "if I don't catch this shot now, I won't get it at all" moment.

Time

The photo was taken at around 9:30am, bit of a rainy day - so we had to make the most of when the sunshine was out.

Lighting

I took the shot in natural light, the sun was fighting through clouds when I was taking the photo. It started to rain shortly afterwards, so the timing was really good. The before & after shots, the owls are in the shade - this was the one shot that came out the best & was worth the whole day.

Equipment

Nikon D90 set to F5.2, exp 1/60, ISO 400, 18-105mm lens, no tripod.

Inspiration

Honestly, I just wanted to see what photos I could get of the animals at the park... & when the owls started to come forward, with their bright yellow eyes, I just knew I had to try to get a shot. I'm glad I did!

Editing

The only post-processing done to the photo was to tweak the contrast slightly & put it into black & white. The original shot looks great, but, in black & white it gives it a whole new dimension & I feel personally makes it more eye-catching.

In my camera bag

I've always got my trusty Nikon D90, 18-105mm 1:3.5-5.6G ED lens, 28-100mm 1:3.5-5.6 G lens, & 70-300MM 1:4-5.6 G lens - plus a handful of memory cards, ready & raring to be used.

Feedback

Just go with the flow - take your time & keep as quiet as possible. The more calm & quiet you are, the more likely the animal you're trying to capture will come out & stick around for you to get your perfect shot.
