In my winter time travels through southern Utah, we often had to pull over in order to take a break. It's a long drive to circumnavigate several states of the South West. We covered roughly the same distance, from Salt Lake City to New York.
Here we're heading toward Monument Valley from the Arches and Canyonlands National Parks. These are just the start of the rock formations. The parks themselves hold a whole new level of spectacular natural beauty.
While this was originally shot in colour, long after the golden hours of morning... I just felt that a lot of detail was lost in the red-orange ochres that dominate the image. I chose to upload black and white because it shows the textures of the road, the rocks, and of course the ground.
This is a dry, arid place, but you can almost be convinced that it's not so bad, with green leaves on the hardier brush.
