The Generous Helping

From the moment I told Aria about her cousins birthday party all she could think about was cake. After a 2 and a half hour drive and nonstop pouting over being able to eat some of her cousin’s cake we had finally arrived. The only thing between Aria and her slice of cake was festivities and traditions. This day was her cousins 1st birthday and what other way do you celebrate a 1 year olds birthday, it was a cake smash party. She watched as the whole cake was placed on top of her cousin’s high chair tray and just knew her baby cousin was going to eat it all but surprisingly she didn’t. In fact her baby cousin didn’t know what to do at all. Everyone in the room was standing around her telling her to eat this gigantic colorful “thing”. After a few minutes her cousin finally touched the icing and was met with a lot of cheering, this startled her so she stopped, but at the time the cake was technically “free game” and Aria was more than ready for some cake. She made her way in front of the high chair as if the cake had summoned her to move closer. Her cousin was finally getting the hang of this new game, the more she grabbed time fistfuls of the cake the more we all cheered a few of the other cousins began grab pieces of the demolished cake. I leaned in and told Aria “go ahead and get some” she went to reach for some of the cake but to her disappointment all of a sudden she was lifted by 2 cake smeared hands and her face ended up in the demolished pile of cake and icing. Her mother put her right back down. She turned away from the high chair table towards me and I was already pressing the trigger of my camera. I had just captured this precious expression of a frown being melted away by a generous helping of smash cake.
