Wildlife can often surprise you. I've been observing and photographing elk for years, especially during the rut. Usually cows and calves get a little edgy when the alpha bull gets close. Never before have I seen a harem (cows and calves both) so relaxed around the alpha. Not only relaxed, but in the case of one cow, outright affectionate. This affection was not a prelude to mating and lasted a good 10 minutes! You can tell the bull was no push over by the battered state of his antlers.
