This photo was taken in my backyard in sunny Arizona!

Time

This photo was taken mid day, on a sunny day, which is pretty common in Arizona, as it’s ALWAYS full sun!

Lighting

To get the most detail in these kinds of macro shots, full daytime, natural light is the best. I try to capture it with the sun to my left or right to reduce shadows!

Equipment

I actually shot this image by hand with my iPhone & olloclip attachment with the rear facing camera. It’s rather hard to do since I’m not able to see the screen. I call it “point & pray”. ‘Point the lens and pray I’m in the frame!’

Inspiration

I can’t remember exactly what inspired me, since I have been taking these kinds of shots for several years. But I have always been intrigued at the intricacy of our eyes. There are so many details that we look at everyday, but never really notice up close!

Editing

Yes, I do alittle bit of post processing, but not too much, as it takes away from the authenticity of the details. Since this was taken with my iPhone, too much processing will degrade the pixels. I use a few sliders in Lightroom to adjust white balance, then I will do a few contrast layers and dodge & burn in photoshop!

In my camera bag

I normally shot Sony A7 with 28-70mm lens, an Olloclip macro lens & a Moment macro lens for my macro eye shots.

Feedback

The best advice is practice, practice, practice. Getting a clear shot on the first take is impossible. Sometimes having the phone on Live Mode, will give you more options on clarity. Take as many shots as you can, because, with these, it’s luck of the draw. You don’t need fancy gear to take a memorable & timeless photo; just time, patience & perspective! :)
