Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken remotely from my home desk. The model was in her house in the USA.

Time

It was a late afternoon in the states and a late evening in Latvia. The time difference is an important thing you should double-check for the remote photo session.

Lighting

Although there was a bit of daylight from the windows, the main light was the ring light on a tripod.

Equipment

For the remote photo session, I used the Shutter app (https://theshutter.app/) and the model's iPhone 11.

Inspiration

Due to recent pandemic restrictions, last year, I started to perform remote photo sessions. I was initially using FaceTime or video calls. But then I found the Shutter app, which provides a lot easier process of performing remote sessions. This was my second session with the model and she offered to perform the session in this wonderful Lolita themed dress (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lolita_fashion). With remote shots, it's possible to travel around the world virtually.

Editing

Some camera/lens and color adjustments were made in the Lightroom. Then I switched to Photoshop. Applied frequency separation to the model's skin, removed some blemishes. Then a bit of local dodge&burn. Finally, sharpened eyes and jewelry.

In my camera bag

When I have my camera bag with me, there is my Canon 7D body, Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II lens, and for a backup EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS. Also, Speedlite 580EX II, some wires, CF cards, and other small things. But during remote photo sessions, you need to work with the model's phone. And I like the challenges it provides.

Feedback

In remote photography, many preparation tasks are transferred from the photographer to the model. Therefore, both of you must be on the same page regarding the session idea and achievable results.
