Behind The Lens

Location

This picture was taken from the Ribersborg Kallbadhus at Ribersborg beach, Malmö.

Time

After a walk at Ribersborg beach in Malmö I decided to watch the sunset from the Ribersborg Kallbadhus. On the way there I turned around to the Turning Torso that was reflecting the last sunrays of the day that were shining through the clouds.

Lighting

I had to wait for the right moment to take this picture as it was a very windy day and the fast moving clouds were changing the amount of light illuminating the Turning Torso within seconds. With the light playing an essential role in this picture, I'm happy that I managed to release the shutter just when the sunrays got through the clouds to illuminate the middle of the tower.

Equipment

This picture was shot handheld on a Fujifilm XS-10 camera and the Fujinon XF 18-55mm f/2,8-4 R LM OIS lens. Settings: Aperture f/8, ISO 400, Shutter 1/250?Focal Length 5500/100.

Inspiration

As a photographer in Malmö you don't come around taking a picture of the city's landmark - The Turning Torso. This also means that there are already a lot of pictures of this building. I was inspired to take this shot by the challenge to get a special picture that stands out the mass of pictures of this specific subject.

Editing

I shot this picture in RAW which gave me more possibilities to edit it afterwards. I decided to enhance the red and orange colors to create a typical sunset scenario but also disrupted it by adding some colder blue and purple colors that represent the cold and windy environment that I was surrounded by when I took the shot.

In my camera bag

My bag is packed pretty minimalistic in comparison to many other photographers because I just started photography in 2021 and didn't have the ressources yet to extend my equipment. This means that I actually always take all my equipment with me. Namely my Fujifilm XS-10 camera with a Fujinon XF 18-55mm f/2,8-4 R LM OIS lens, my Rollei Compact Traveler No 1 Carbon tripod, a spare battery, charger, raincover for my bag, and a plastic bag with a hole in it to cover my camera in case I take pictures during rain (very important!).

Feedback

Obviously nature does not always behave as you need it for the perfect shot. Therefore, my advice is to always take your camera with you. Even if you are just going to the grocery store around the corner, you can always come across special situations that will never repeat. Usually, this situations tend to happen when you are not looking for them. So always be prepared!
