Location
This is actually a fairly common setting at the Aran Islands just off the west coast in what’s known as Galway Bay. This particular photo was taken while on the largest of the three islands, Inisheer. Between countless miles of countryside with stone fences and the high coastal cliffs the area is any photographer’s dream.Time
The tour of the Aran Islands was a day trip which started with an early morning, cold and slightly wet, boat ride. While several photographs of the countryside were taken throughout the day, coming across this sight around noon was a real treasure. It was still quite cold out and enough cloud cover to make judging sunlight a little challenging. Occasionally there was a short wait for the ideal level of sunlight to perfect the picture. Armed with an iPhone and no other equipment a stead hand was required for what was originally intended to be a casual snapshot. Sometimes it’s the most basic if conditions that yields the greatest results.Lighting
I’m not what you would call an accomplished photographer so provided the was enough sunlight available to make the photo interesting and memorable I was content. Moving cloud cover constantly changed the lighting levels which turned out beneficial as the same scene can be captured slightly differently. Don’t like the lighting level - just wait three minutes and it will be completely different.Equipment
A simple iPhone was all the equipment taken as there was no intention of trying to take anything artistic or post on a website. If I’d know about joining ViewBug later I certainly would have at least packed a tripod.Inspiration
Walking about the sights of the Aran Islands you can’t be helped but to need to photograph almost everything. From farms with winding stone fences to high cliffs and in some places where the two meet right on the edge.Editing
Fortunately all required for this particular photo was only the slightest increase in contrast and cropping on the left and top. Very mild adjustments to create a memorable image. In my camera bag
Wish I could say more about equipment and preparation but the truth is my camera bag is usually the pocket of whatever jacket I’m wearing on that given day. Everything I do is taken with an iPhone. Just bought my first tripod for it about two weeks ago!Feedback
If you ever find yourself venturing throughout the UK countryside I suggest just taking a massive number of photos. So many picturesque sights to enjoy with what seems like so little time. Keep your equipment in top shape and take spares of everything. You don’t want a dead battery ruining an ideal opportunity.
