Location
Tsitsikamma National Park, on the southern coast of South Africa.Time
around 4 pm, about 2 hours before sunset.Lighting
It was a fairly bright day with harsh light, but this particular spot had a great shadow from the rock on the leftEquipment
This was shot with a Nikon D5500 and a Sigma 10-20mm f/4-5.6Inspiration
I was pottering about on the rocks at the coast looking for interesting shots. The light wasn't ideal and I wasn't getting anything worthwhile. I decided to walk along an outcrop of rocks that juts out into the sea, and found this hollow that isn't visible from the shore. Set the camera on the ground and used the articulating screen to compose the shot. Didn't think much of it until I went through these images a few months later, and it popped out at me.Editing
I used a gradient filter applied diagonally to darken down the sky in the background and increase the contrast of the foreground rocks. A bit of sharpening, dodging and burning to accentuate the rock strataIn my camera bag
My Sigma 10-20, and the kit Nikon 18-55 + 70-300. I also carry a tripod, Some ND Filters and a circular polariserFeedback
Be adventurous and go off the beaten path. This shot wasn't very obvious until I was right on top of it
