Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken at Anglesey Abbey Gardens in Cambridgeshire this January. They are famous for their snowdrops and I used to work there as a volunteer gardener when I was a youngster. Before I joined the big bad world of work.

Time

This was taken quite early in the morning, which is how I dot the dew. I was taking my young son for a walk to try and give my wife a break. I ended up kneeling on my coat to stabilise myself as I had no tripod and the grass was soaking wet.

Lighting

All natural light. I had no idea just how much detail I had captured and this was the photo that made me fall in love with macro photography.

Equipment

I used a Nikon D750 with a sigma 105 2.8 macro. As previously mentioned, the coat was also vital to stop me wetting my trousers, as it were.

Inspiration

There wasn't much in bloom and I was taking photos on this walk to keep myself sane while my son cried at me because he was missing his mummy.

Editing

I only use lightroom mobile. I have two different edits on my profile of this same photo. The first is fairly true to life with a bit of work on the highlights mostly. The second is a bit more creative, boosting the light rays that were about.

In my camera bag

I don't tend to take a bag with me. I only own my Nikon D750, the sigma 105 macro and a sigma 150-600 sport, which weighs a lot. With lock down I have only really been shooting in my garden anyway, but when I do go out I tend to pick a lens best for what I'm hoping to capture. I like to carry as little as possible with me.

Feedback

Depth of field is the hardest thing with macro in my opinion. I look at this photo and it isn't perfect by any means. I used autofocus, where now I tend to manually focus my macro work. Tips wise I'd say moving your body slightly forwards and backwards for minute focus works for me. Also trust your technique and keep your shutter speed as low as you can manage, wind allowing, to keep your iso as low as possible. This was a natural few shot, but I do now carry a small spray bottle with me sometimes. It makes some flowers look better in my opinion and also doubles to keep the kids in check on such walks.
